How To Integrate And Automate Your Business Systems And Data To Create Incredible Outcomes

Steve Lucas’ new book, Digital Impact: The Human Element of AI-Driven Transformation, maps out how to integrate your company’s systems and data so you can build a permanent competitive advantage.

Lucas explains that the rapid rise of artificial intelligence has created unparalleled opportunities for organizations to innovate, grow, and make a difference. Yet, many companies are stuck, unable to achieve their full potential because of two pervasive issues: digital fragmentation and data complexity.

Fortunately, using real-world customer stories as examples and writing in non-technical language that will appeal to every reader, he shows businesses how to solve the ubiquitous problems of digital fragmentation and data complexity,

“We stand at a crossroads where technology isn’t just evolving – it’s rewriting the rules,” shares Lucas. “This book is your guide to mastering that change.”

Inspiring stories explored in this book include:

  • How a chocolate company is working to end child labor in the cocoa-growing process in West Africa.
  • How a well-known charitable organization provides aid and services for people in need.
  • How a credit union helps members make better financial decisions for their families.

You will also learn about how organizations are:

  • Providing critical aid after natural disasters by integrating fragmented systems.
  • Helping farmers grow food more sustainably, addressing global food insecurity.
  • Ensuring college students have access to everything they need for success.

Plus, Lucas covers:

  • The real reason why digital transformation initiatives often fail.

The book also includes conversations with business luminaries such as Larry Quinlan (former Global CIO, Deloitte); Mark Fields (former CEO, Ford Motor Company); Betsy Atkins (corporate board leader and three-time CEO); Dr. Vishal Sikka (founder of Vianai and former CEO of Infosys); and Paul Cormier (former CEO, Red Hat).

Finally, Lucas tells organizations that for businesses to succeed in the age of AI, they must be relentlessly focused on integrating and automating their systems. “It’s the only way to drive what we refer to as AI-fueled digital transformation. Or, said more succinctly, AI-field change,” adds Lucas.

For business leaders across industries, Digital Impact serves as an essential blueprint to unleash an organization's full potential for doing good by digitally transforming its technology architectures through integration and automation.

“Keep in mind that the choices you make today about integrating and automating your systems will define the future of your business,” states Lucas. “There is no guarantee that you will succeed if you invest in AI. But there is a guarantee you will fail if you don’t invest in AI.”

Some of my favorite takeaways from Lucas and his teachings in the book are:

  • The best way to prepare for changes you can’t predict is to make your organization as nimble and flexible as possible.
  • How your success with AI will depend on the degree of connectivity within your digital architecture.
  • Regardless of your business’ digital architecture strategy, connecting everything within your technology landscape should be your top priority.
  • AI will be practical for your business only when you identify clear use cases and can measure the results to show business value.
  • Taking a responsible approach to AI means staying true to your values, implementing safeguards, and being transparent with people about potential impacts.

Steve Lucas

Lucas shares these additional insights with us:

Question: In what ways do integration and automation empower businesses to achieve outcomes that benefit both people and the planet?

Lucas: We know they’re game-changers for a business. Connecting systems and automating processes reduce waste, optimize resource use, and minimize errors. This not only boosts efficiency and profitability but also promotes sustainable practices. When we streamline operations, we lessen our environmental footprint and create more positive impacts for people – employees, customers, and communities alike.

Question: Why is it crucial for leaders to emphasize the human element in AI initiatives?

Lucas: AI is a powerful tool, but the human element should guide its purpose and application. Leaders must prioritize AI solutions designed to serve people, address real human needs, and meet ethical considerations. AI should enhance rather than replace human capabilities. It’s about augmenting human potential and ensuring technology serves as a force for good. That’s how we’re going to build trust in AI.

Question: What are the most common misconceptions about digital transformation that need to be addressed?

Lucas: A prevalent misconception is that digital transformation is solely about implementing new technologies. It’s really about reimagining business processes and culture to leverage technology effectively. Another myth is that it’s a one-time project. Digital transformation is an ongoing journey that requires continuous adaptation and learning. It’s not just about digitizing old, existing processes. It’s innovation that creates new value streams.

Question: What practical steps can leaders take immediately to address digital fragmentation within their organizations?

Lucas: First, conduct a comprehensive audit of your current systems and data flows to identify silos and integration gaps. Next, develop a strategic plan to unify these disparate elements, prioritizing initiatives that offer the most significant impact. Invest in integration platforms that facilitate seamless communication between systems. Finally, foster a culture that values data-sharing and collaboration. That will break down the organizational barriers that contribute to fragmentation.

How To Uncover Your Blindspots To Become A Better Leader

What you don't see about yourself can hold you back as a leader. That's typical for many leaders. What we don't see is what we  can't  see: we have  blindspots . Your blindspots prevent you from achieving your greatest success.  “It turns out that we're often not great judges of ourselves, even when we think we are. Sometimes we're simply unaware of a behavior or trait that's causing problems,” explains  Martin Dubin , author of the new book,  Blindspotting: How To See What’s Holding You Back As A Leader . “Bottom line: until we uncover these blindspots, we can't move forward. The good news is that you can learn to do your own  blindspotting .”   “Most of us understand the idea of blindspots in a general sense—areas we can’t see, to take the term most literally, or places we have gaps that we may not even realize, to be a little more abstract,” says Dubin.  “But in the context of this book, I’m defining blindspots quite specifically: They are...

How To Overcome Four Common Challenges To Become A Better Communicator

“Raising your game as a communicator is one of the best ways to make a difference in the world, but it takes courage to open up to others and invite others to open up to you” says Michelle D. Gladieux , author of the new book, Communicate With Courage: Taking Risks To Overcome The Four Hidden Challenges .   Gladieux explains that those four hidden challenges and sneaky obstacles that can keep you from becoming the best communicator you can be are:  Hiding —Fear of exposing your supposed weaknesses. Defining —Putting too much stock into assumptions and being quick to judge. Rationalizing —Using “being realistic” to shield yourself from taking chances, engaging in conflict, or doing other scary but potentially rewarding actions. Settling —Stopping at “good enough” instead of aiming for something better in your interactions.  According to Gladieux, these challenges all have something in common. They require taking risks—to reveal yourself, question your beliefs,...

How To Unleash The Most Powerful Force In Business

In Marcus Buckingham ’s latest book, Design Love In: How To Unleash The Most Powerful Force In Business , he details the one hidden skill at the heart of all the best leaders today—and what you can do in your own working life to cultivate it. The skill is leading lovingly —what Buckingham calls Design Love In (DLI). Being a leader, whom people say they love working for and for whom they’d walk through walls. A leader who gets the absolute best out of their employees and who builds the kind of team employees desperately want to be on.  “Love fuels our resilience, sparks our creativity, and bonds us together as collaborators,” shares Buckingham. “Love means a passionate commitment to something or someone. Love means deep loyalty. Love is advocacy. And, of course, love can also be hard-edged, hence ‘tough love.’” Buckingham recommends leaders create experiences that: Make employees feel bigger. Allow employees to feel safe enough to open up. Help employees flourish. Further, Buckingh...

Leadership Lessons From Kent Taylor, Founder Of Texas Roadhouse

From cover-to-cover of Made From Scratch you’ll learn the leadership lessons of the late Kent Taylor , founder of the restaurant chain Texas Roadhouse.  In the new book, Taylor recounts how he built the restaurant chain from the ground up after being rejected more than 80 times as he pitched the idea for the business.  His approach to business was often out-of-the-box, however, his business lessons and leadership lessons from the course of his life and career are invaluable.  Here are some of my favorite leadership lessons from Kent and his book:  The best leaders stay down-to-earth and approachable.  In a bottom-up company, the leader learns from frontline people.  As soon as you make a profit, find a way to give back.  Be willing to laugh at yourself.  Become a student of your craft.  Positive reinforcement inspires much greater performance than fear ever can.  Want to get the respect of your people? Then roll up y...
