The Three Box Solution For Leading Innovation

Vijay Govindarajan’s book, The Three Box Solution , is all about how to: Box 1 – Manage your present core business at peak efficiency and profitability. Box 2 – Escape the traps of the past by identifying and divesting business and abandoning practices, ideas, and attitudes that have lost relevance in a changed environment. Box 3 – Generate breakthrough ideas and convert them into new products and businesses. And, as leaders, he recommends that you e nsure your organization does now fall into any of these three traps: The Complacency Trap – where current success conditions a business to suppose that securing the future requires nothing more than repeating what it did to succeed in the past. The Cannibalization Trap – that persuades leaders that new business models based on nonlinear ideas will jeopardize your company’s present prosperity. In other words, don’t protect your present core business by resisting ideas that don’t conform to models of the past. The Co...

Bill Bradley Advocates Citizen Leadership In New Book

Inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s second State of the Union address, author Bill Bradley advocates citizen leadership in his new book, We Can All Do Better . Lincoln said, “We can succeed only by concert.  It is not ‘Can any of us imagine better?’ but ‘Can we all do better?’” So, that’s where Bradley starts his book.  He then goes on to share his highly personal review of the current state of the nation.  We can All Do Better is a timely read as we near the November presidential election. As an eighteen-year New Jersey Senator, financial and investment advisor, Olympic and NBA athlete, national radio host, and best-selling author, Bradley’s varied leader and teammate experiences create interesting perspectives, including ones on: Job creation  Education  Deficit reduction  Key takeaways from the book for me include these about teams and what makes a team effective : At some point, it dawns on a member of a team that by helping his/her te...

Geoffrey James On What Makes An Extraordinary Boss

A friend shared with me a spot-on article by Geoffrey James the other day. In it, James explains the difference between averages bosses and extraordinary bosses . He demonstrates why the best managers have a fundamentally different understanding of workplace, company, and team dynamics. His insights are based on his interviews of some of the most successful CEOs.  Read his article in its entirety.  The eight points he explains are: 1. Business is an ecosystem, not a battlefield. 2. A company is a community, not a machine. 3. Management is service, not control. 4. My employees are my peers, not my children. 5. Motivation comes from vision, not from fear. 6. Change equals growth, not pain. 7. Technology offers empowerment, not automation. 8. Work should be fun, not mere toil. James writes the "Sales Source" column on Inc.com , the world's most-visited sales-oriented blog, which features the best ideas from dozens of sales experts and executive...

How To Create An Effective Company Blog

If you lead a business and aren’t among the many companies using a blog for marketing purposes, your business likely will within the next year. Awhile back, Emarketer estimated that the proportion of all U.S. companies that will use dedicated blogs as a marketing channel will reach 43% this year. Businesses using blogs for communications, lead generation, customer service and branding primarily do so for these reasons : • corporate control of the tool • its integration with company web properties • no limits on post lengths • the ability to maintain a full, searchable repository of information Successful blogs generally follow these tips and guidelines : 1. Make your blog as non-promotional as possible. 2. Keep it relevant to the reader. 3. Answer your customers’ questions or address their pain points. 4. Be sure it’s well-written. 5. Make it relevant to your company or products. 6. Offer proof or third-party validation to claims ...

What Does A Business Owner Need To Know When Hiring A Marketing Leader?

Welcome  Debbie Laskey to my blog! With 15 years of marketing experience and an MBA Degree, Debbie developed her marketing expertise while working in the high-tech industry, the Consumer Marketing Department at Disneyland Paris in France, the non-profit arena, and the insurance industry. Currently, Debbie is a brand marketing and social media consultant to small businesses and nonprofits in California. I met Debbie a few years ago while we worked together on a training committee for MicroMentor , a nonprofit that connects small business owners with business mentors. Debbie and I recently discussed what business owners should look for when hiring marketing leaders, and highlights are provided below. Eric:  What personality traits are ideal for a marketing leader ? Debbie Laskey : First, marketing is not sales. I say this because, while the two areas must work in tandem if both departments exist in a company, sales people have very different personalities tha...

Do You Practice Open Leadership?

Open Leadership author Charlene Li reminds leaders to periodically ask themselves these " open leadership skills assessment" questions : Do I seek out and listen to different points of view? Do I make myself available to people at all levels of the organization? Do I actively manage how I am authentic? Do I encourage people to share information? Do I publicly admit when I am wrong? Do I update people regularly? Do I take the time to explain how decisions are being made? Thanks for these great questions, Charlene!
